Riot Fest - An Adventure in Music
Knowing full well this is something that I should have started last year, I think it's time I post some of my other photographic adventures outside of my portrait work. This past summer I was lucky enough to receive a media pass from Corus Entertainment to shoot Riot Fest at Downsview Park in Toronto, it was beyond an incredible experience and, even though at the time I didn't realize it, life changing.
I had never shot live music before, I was nervous, I didn't know what lenses to bring. I wanted to bring all of them but let's face it, they are heavy and when you don't use them, your shoulders hate you for it. Day one was the test, it went over pretty well. I spent the better part of the afternoon playing with shutter speeds and pushing my Canon 6D to see how it would fair in a fast paced focusing situation. It killed it.
As much as I love live music, I love shooting people in their element. When you go to shows nowadays, everyone is on their phone. Shooting video, taking selfies, trying to record the moment so that they can remember it, when they should be living it.
These photos are a journey through my two days shooting Riot Fest. It was a beautiful experience and because of this weekend I am now a freelance shooter for Corus Entertainment. When someone takes a chance on you and gives you a media pass, you have to live up to the challenge. Go the extra mile, create a memory so that those around you can look back and remember the day, through the eyes of someone else, not their iPhone.
